This week I had the privilege of addressing graduates of a two-year Orientation and Mobility course run by the South African Guide-dog Association. The theme for the day was "I have a dream" and, since I cover the topic of having a dream quite extensively in my book What Every Blind Person Needs YOU To Know, I was eager to share my thoughts.
This is the story of how, in my fifties, I got back in the saddle to explore the world on horseback in spite of being severely visually impaired. I believe in dreams and in the soul's calling. When opportunity and intention come together, anything is possible. But it all began with claiming the right to do what was buried deep in my heart.
My first experience of equine assisted occupational therapy
If you are considering equine-assisted occupational therapy, this account of my first session may be of interest to you. The specialisation is mostly for helping children with emotional problems but it also covers the field of riding for the disabled. In my case, I need help getting back into the saddle after many years of not riding and learning new ways of interacting with horses.
Finding a hippotherapist
This blog is intended to encourage and inspire others like me who want to begin a new and daring venture, so I'm going to spell out exactly what I did to get the process started. Note that I was responding to something my soul was calling me to do and I believed the universe or God would support me in it. If you are following a similar sense of your soul's calling, i believe you will experience the same support.
